The Devil She Knows

a bedazzling tale, fun and well written. A bit of a chess match between the main characters as they find their true selves.

I absolutely loved this story. I only wish they took a little bit more time falling for each other. And I wish the book was longer, but I enjoyed every minute.

Who hasn't seen "Bedazzled" starring Elizabeth Hurley and Brendan Fraser, or of course, the monkey's paw? The scenarios lovesick, dumped Samantha Cooper wishes for are delightfully, but unsurprisingly, twisted by demon Daphne. After six used wishes, Sam's soul is Daphne's. It's no surprise that the majority of Sam's wishes center around her ex-girlfriend and wanting to find a way to get back together - WITHOUT taking away Hannah's free will. I.e., no wishing Hannah would fall madly in love with her. What made the book maddening was 1) Sam's hard-headed lovesick obsession on centering it all around Hannah, 2) her inability to self-reflect and 3) I think the book itself mentioned it was about 12 hours had passed until the 5th wish? That's too soon to fall in love, I felt. But perhaps it's meant to be an extension of Sam's love-hard mindset... I did find some of the details of Daphne's life and employment interesting. I felt that could've been built upon more. However, I'm not sure I'll be willing to read a book set in this universe that explores that. I'm not interested to find out more about Daphne's and Sam's lives moving forward. A book I'm ok with. I'm glad I borrowed it from the public library instead of purchasing it, like I thought of doing.
