Description

Daniel has built his career on debunking the supernatural, turning ghost hunting into a clinical science. But when he steps inside the decaying, shadow-drenched halls of the Joliet Asylum, his skepticism faces an impossible challenge. The air here is heavy with the weight of forgotten souls and a history that refuses to stay buried. Amidst the flickering lights and chilling whispers, Daniel encounters Chad, a spirit whose presence is as magnetic as it is haunting. What begins as a standard investigation quickly transforms into a profound exploration of human connection that transcends the veil of death. As Daniel peels back the layers of the asylum’s traumatic past, he finds himself drawn into an unexpected romance that defies the traditional boundaries of reality. This story is a sophisticated fusion of eerie atmosphere and heartfelt longing, offering a psychological richness that lingers long after the final page. It is a tale that balances the sharp sting of social reckoning with the warmth of a love that survives the afterlife. For readers who crave an immersive experience where the line between the living and the dead blurs, this journey promises a hauntingly beautiful encounter with the ghosts of yesterday and the possibilities of today.

A Fun Little Jaunt Through A Dark Topic

As usual, Mr. Silver's work is to the brain what fresh cookies are to the mouth. In this case there's a sharp spice of difficult social reckoning with our history in the mental health and LGBT marginalization through the lens of institutional treatment, via the setting of an asylum. In spite of the setting, it's a sweet, affirming treat where goodness triumphs and heartlessness earns what it deserves: exactly the kind of treat Silver fans have come to expect.

4.5 stars

This book offers an immersive combination of the eerie/scary/otherworldly (fitting, in a decrepit asylum with a complicated history). Chad and Daniel are each deeply interesting characters, and it’s rewarding to watch them together. There’s a complex investigation to navigate, some baggage to unpack, and it’s all compellingly done— fans of the series (and a gentle note here that this is part of a series and it’s a good idea to start at the beginning if you haven’t already) will find a lot to appreciate in this installment. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
